The history begins with a Russian, Demikof who did an animal heart-lung transplant in 1946 and it survived two hours. Denton Cooley had a patient last 14 hours, Lillehei in 1969 had a patient with a few days survival. Christian Barnard did a heart transplant in 1971 that lasted 23 days.
